Anthropic has begun providing employee-like access to METR, a nonprofit evaluator of frontier AI models, as part of its commitment to independent third-party assessment. The company signed the White House Accord on Super Intelligence and aims to close the gap between what evaluators and the company itself understand about its systems. To evaluate frontier models, evaluators require expertise in capabilities assessment, independence, deep access to training and safeguards, and freedom to publish results. Anthropic defined three tiers of access: the first tier allows publication only with company approval, the second tier permits publication without approval but with possible redactions, and the third tier grants employee-like access with similar publication rights as the second. METR is currently at the third tier, while SecureBio operates at the first tier, and collaborations with Accenture and Faculty are in early stages.

Anthropic detailed strengthened election safeguards for Claude ahead of the 2026 US midterms, based on a week-long analysis of 250,000 conversations to understand usage patterns and prevent misuse. About 5.75% of US Claude.ai conversations touch on politics, 0.51% on elections, and 0.01% ask for voting recommendations, with violations at 0.002%; election-specific queries are expected to increase closer to Election Day. New features include TurboVote banners, state-specific voting information from Democracy Works, and live election-night results. Claude Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5, and Haiku 5.5 scored 99% on political evenhandedness, but independent reviews found uneven hedging and unsolicited caveats in some responses. Anthropic partnered with ISD and McCain Institute to pressure-test defenses, added classifiers for multi-step misuse, and banned accounts used to produce content favoring adversarial narratives.

At Anthropic, Claude’s ability to iterate on code at high speed has caused git-based source control to become the bottleneck in their development workflow. To handle the growth from 2,500 to over 30,000 daily code merges, the team built Scion, an in-house version control system, fully migrating their monorepo from git in five months. Scion diverges from git by assuming clients are always online, shifting computation to the server, and using horizontally scalable data structures without any fully materialized copy of the repository. The system stores changes as entries in a write-ahead log, supports sparse and virtualized checkouts, and enables cheap, lock-free commits that scale with change size rather than repository size. Anthropic shares Scion’s design principles to help the broader ecosystem prepare for AI-driven scaling challenges, noting that similar pressure points will emerge for other organizations as AI coding tools become more common.

Anthropic launched a new life sciences research group to use AI agents for fundamental biology discovery. In one of their first programs, Claude agents autonomously analyzed over 200,000 reverse transcriptase sequences from a DNA database. After 21 hours and 210 million tokens, one agent spotted a repeating DNA pattern next to a reverse transcriptase gene, which it identified as a CRISPR-like system. The system, called ART (array-associated reverse transcriptases), consists of the RT, an accessory protein, and an array of non-coding DNA repeats that are expressed as distinct small RNAs. Its function remains unknown, but the pattern of repeats is only found together in other programmable DNA-cutting systems, suggesting ART may be a new tool for biotechnology.
