## Summary

CUDA Python 1.0, released with CUDA 13.3, presents Python as a supported way to access the full NVIDIA CUDA platform. It addresses a fragmented ecosystem in which libraries used separate binding layers, complicating shared GPU memory, streams, and resource ownership, and forcing developers toward either CUDA C++ extensions or higher-level libraries. The release combines independently versioned components, including cuda.core, cuda.compute, cuda.bindings, cuda-pathfinder, and nvmath-python, with semantic-versioning and deprecation commitments. cuda.core supplies common Python objects for devices, streams, and buffers, allowing NVIDIA and external libraries to compose on shared resources, while cuda.bindings offers 1:1 CUDA C API coverage. The stack spans runtime services, tuned CUDA libraries, communication tools, and kernel-authoring systems, although some newer kernel languages remain experimental and outside the 1.0 guarantees.

## Context

Python developers previously had to write CUDA C++ extensions and maintain bindings, or rely on higher-level libraries such as PyTorch, CuPy, or RAPIDS. Separate CUDA binding layers made it difficult for libraries to share GPU memory and streams without copying, while exposing newer CUDA capabilities required each library to implement them independently.

## Approach / What changed

CUDA Python 1.0 groups independently versioned libraries around cuda.core, which provides common Python objects for devices, streams, buffers, and other CUDA concepts. The release adds semantic-versioning commitments, low-level 1:1 coverage through cuda.bindings, Python access to CCCL algorithms and NVIDIA math libraries, CUDA component discovery through cuda-pathfinder, and access to communication and kernel-authoring layers.

## Takeaways

- CUDA Python components follow independent release tracks, but public APIs receive semantic-versioning protections: breaking changes are reserved for major releases, features arrive in minor releases, and removals are deprecated first.
- cuda.core gives libraries a shared representation of devices, streams, and buffers, enabling operations such as a Numba kernel and cuda.compute call on the same GPU buffer and stream.
- Some newer kernel-authoring languages, including cutile-python and cuteDSL, remain experimental and are not yet covered by the CUDA Python 1.0 semantic-versioning guarantees.
