## Summary

ClickStack’s June–July releases add a broader set of observability features, with work centered on trace navigation, metrics sources, dashboards, and filter performance. The trace waterfall now assigns stable colors by service, keeps span durations outside bars, preserves clickable proportions for very short spans, and adds a minimap plus OpenTelemetry span-link navigation. Metrics support includes quantiles for exponential histograms, a leaner default schema, and an experimental UI connection to external Prometheus-compatible endpoints, while PromQL is proxied to the configured endpoint. Dashboard filters can narrow one another, event patterns can appear as tiles, kiosk mode provides a read-only display, and filter-value discovery prefers ClickHouse text indexes when available. Additional changes cover alert annotations, browser RUM dashboard views, external links from table tiles, grid snapping, and service-map coloring by latency, error rate, or throughput.

## Context

The June–July update bundles two releases whose work was shaped substantially by user feedback. It addresses trace-navigation needs, including workflows involving long traces and span links, and supports teams that already operate Prometheus-compatible systems or want to evaluate ClickStack alongside existing observability tools.

## Approach / What changed

The releases redesign the trace waterfall, add a minimap and span-link display, extend metrics support with exponential-histogram quantiles and external Prometheus connectivity, and improve dashboards with interdependent filters, event-pattern tiles, kiosk mode, alert annotations, and service-map metric coloring. Filter autocomplete and dropdowns now select among available retrieval strategies, trying ClickHouse text indexes first when available.

## Takeaways

- The trace minimap displays the full time range, marks the current viewport, and supports brushing to zoom, dragging to pan, and resizing from either edge.
- External Prometheus connectivity is experimental and off by default; enabling it requires NEXT\_PUBLIC\_ENABLE\_PROMQL=true, and the post recommends using it in non-production environments first.
- Autocomplete and filter dropdowns use ClickHouse text indexes through mergeTreeTextIndex() when available, allowing indexed terms to be read without reading the underlying data parts.
