- Type: Announcement

Stripe introduces Stripe Workflows, a Dashboard-based system for orchestrating Stripe products and APIs through responsive, end-to-end automation. It addresses the complexity of coordinating multiple Stripe products by replacing custom event-handling and dependency-management code with visual workflows that support real-time triggers, branching logic, dynamic fields, and more than 600 event triggers. Workflows includes execution monitoring with event-payload and step-level tracing, 30-day default log retention, exponential-backoff retries, built-in idempotency, and recursion protection capped at a depth of five. The post describes applications including reducing chargeback risk, routing high-value transactions for compliance review, and creating custom-priced subscriptions from finalized quotes without additional infrastructure.

### [Introducing Stripe's new public preview release channel](https://yomu.fyi/post/introducing-stripe-s-new-public-preview-release-channel.md)

- Type: Announcement

Stripe announces its new public preview release channel, which provides early access to API features before their General Availability launches. Preview features are described as operationally stable and production-ready, but they may receive breaking changes more often than GA features and may have geographic, onboarding, or approval restrictions. Each preview uses a distinct API version ending in preview, such as 2025-04-30.preview, selected through the Stripe-Version header; preview versions also appear in the API reference and changelog. Beta SDKs will use these preview versions and include preview features, with releases differentiated from GA counterparts by suffixes such as 5.2.0-beta.1. The example shows that a feature released only in preview is rejected by a GA version, requiring an explicit version change before use; this separation lets teams integrate earlier and provide feedback while avoiding unintended adoption of features with known restrictions.

- Type: Problem & solution

Shopify’s mobile app has about 600 screens, but building every non-critical screen natively or in React Native was costly and slowed development, while conventional WebViews felt slow, disconnected, and out of place. Mobile Bridge addresses this hybrid-app problem with native iOS and Android modules that preload, authenticate, cache, and reuse WebViews, reducing P75 load time from 6 seconds to 1.4 seconds, including network latency and rendering. Built on @remote-ui/rpc, the framework uses JavaScript, CSS, Polaris overrides, title and action APIs, TransportableView, snapshots, and native modal transitions to preserve state and align web screens with native navigation and appearance. WebViews can also invoke native features such as date pickers, barcode scanning, and Add to Wallet; Shopify says the standalone library is being adopted across other products while critical features remain native or React Native.

### [Stripe’s new AI Assistant in VS Code](https://yomu.fyi/post/stripe-s-new-ai-assistant-in-vs-code.md)
- Company: [Stripe](https://yomu.fyi/company/stripe.md)
- Author: Mathew Varughese
- Published: Mar 18, 2025
- Type: Announcement

Stripe has introduced an AI Assistant in its VS Code extension to answer developer questions using current Stripe knowledge rather than relying on LLM pre-training. The extension retrieves API reference entries, integration guides, code examples, and curated summaries of developer Discord threads, while inserting the user’s API key into generated snippets and supporting either GitHub Copilot’s @stripe agent or its own chat interface. Its retrieval pipeline classifies queries, combines BM25 keyword and k-nearest-neighbor embedding search, reranks results, and sends selected sources, code, user code, and the question to Claude Sonnet through a RAG prompt. A nightly Temporal workflow refreshes indexed content, while evaluation uses golden and synthetic datasets, Mean Reciprocal Rank, and human and automated review. On its synthetic test dataset, the system includes the best source about 91.11% of the time and reports an MRR of about 78%.

### [TechDocs at Grab: Cultivating a culture of quality documentation](https://yomu.fyi/post/techdocs-at-grab-cultivating-a-culture-of-quality-documentation.md)
- Company: [Grab](https://yomu.fyi/company/grab.md)
- Author: David Khu
- Published: Feb 27, 2025
- Type: Problem & solution

Grab’s TechDocs working group describes a two- to three-year effort to make high-quality documentation part of everyday engineering culture. Built on the Helix engineering platform and a Docs-as-Code workflow, TechDocs gives teams a central place to create, manage, and access technical content, while user research informs tool and process changes. The programme combines inventory-taking, policy, team enablement, and recurring measurement, using broad surveys and 1:1 observation to identify fragmented tools, weak ownership, search problems, and maintenance gaps. Research found that only 2% of engineers reported resolving 80–100% of on-call questions through documentation; later initiatives included an editor, writing training, practical workshops, and recognition tied partly to documentation quality and on-call-bot response accuracy. Planned work includes better navigation, training, feedback loops, and editing workflows.

### [Sharing Tinder’s latest contributions to the open source community](https://yomu.fyi/post/sharing-tinder-s-latest-contributions-to-the-open-source-community.md)
- Company: [Tinder](https://yomu.fyi/company/tinder.md)
- Author: Tinder
- Published: Jan 29, 2025
- Type: Announcement

Tinder open-sourced several iOS development repositories, including Layout, Nodes Architecture Framework, and CombineUI, to share the engineering patterns supporting its iPhone application. As the app expanded across diverse device profiles and scale, engineering teams faced reliability, consistency, and memory challenges under their legacy architecture. In response, Tinder developed Nodes, a plugin-based architecture framework using compile-time dependency injection and lifecycle hooks that enforce complete memory release upon feature dismissal. For interface construction, Tinder created Layout, a domain-specific Auto Layout wrapper offering declarative syntax for UIKit views to eliminate storyboard merge conflicts while preserving native capabilities. The resulting stack enables isolated testing of business logic, native reactive event binding, and incremental adoption of SwiftUI across the codebase.

### [Testing Connect onboarding with Sandboxes](https://yomu.fyi/post/testing-connect-onboarding-with-sandboxes.md)
- Company: [Stripe](https://yomu.fyi/company/stripe.md)
- Author: David Edoh-Bedi
- Published: Dec 19, 2024
- Type: Tutorial

Stripe Connect testing can become unwieldy as platforms cover payment methods, US states, international countries, and merchant verification conditions, while the existing test mode stays synchronized with live settings. Sandboxes provide an isolated environment that can replicate a platform’s live configuration without affecting live payment traffic. The workflow covers creating a Sandbox, confirming that Connect settings such as negative-liability handling were preserved, and onboarding test connected accounts through Stripe-provided or custom flows. To reproduce a website-verification failure, a custom account can use “https://inaccessible.stripe.com”; after testing an update to “https://accessible.stripe.com” in the Sandbox, the platform can apply the fix to its production onboarding flow.

### [Japan community highlights: Effective testing and security](https://yomu.fyi/post/japan-community-highlights-effective-testing-and-security.md)
- Company: [Stripe](https://yomu.fyi/company/stripe.md)

This article reports practical lessons from two September 2024 JP\_Stripes events in Aizuwakamatsu and Sapporo for developing and operating Stripe-integrated services more efficiently and at lower cost. Sandboxes let teams create up to five separate test environments, reproduce payment failures and state transitions through Stripe's API, and use CI-specific workspaces without production access. Stripe Connect examples show how a three-person codoc team launched in nine months by staggering account creation and embedding payout and payment-management interfaces. For fraud prevention, the article recommends Radar or Radar for Teams with webhook automation, including early-fraud-warning events and preemptive cancellation or refunds when dispute fees exceed transaction value. Together, these cases emphasize using managed Stripe capabilities and community-shared implementation experience to reduce testing effort, UI work, and fraud-related costs.

### [Managing multiple Stripe test environments from your AWS-hosted application](https://yomu.fyi/post/managing-multiple-stripe-test-environments-from-your-aws-hosted-applic.md)
- Company: [Stripe](https://yomu.fyi/company/stripe.md)
- Author: James Beswick
- Published: Nov 26, 2024
- Type: Explainer

Stripe sandboxes provide isolated test accounts that let teams manage multiple environments from one account. Unlike legacy test mode, each sandbox has separate data, its own API keys, and configurable user access, while up to five sandboxes can exist per account. They support simulated external events, fake balances, Test Payouts with API v2 keys, and CLI or SDK access by changing keys. For AWS-hosted applications, the recommended pattern stores sandbox and production keys in AWS Secrets Manager, using secret names as environment-neutral aliases rather than embedding environment logic in code. Teams can combine Stripe sandbox permissions with AWS IAM resource policies and directory groups to restrict which users or accounts can retrieve keys and prevent accidental production access.

### [How Tinder Eased Development Pain With Ignis](https://yomu.fyi/post/how-tinder-eased-development-pain-with-ignis.md)
- Company: [Tinder](https://yomu.fyi/company/tinder.md)
- Author: Tinder
- Published: Nov 15, 2024
- Type: Problem & solution

Managing hundreds of microservices with disparate configurations forced Tinder engineers to deploy code to staging environments to verify every change, slowing development velocity. To shorten feedback loops, the team created Ignis, a Go-based CLI tool that lets engineers run an isolated service locally while proxying ingress and egress traffic through a multi-tenant development Kubernetes cluster. Ignis pairs with an API gateway for client testing and uses a custom Smart Router proxy to dynamically intercept downstream gRPC and HTTP requests via Kubernetes informers and header propagation. Since launching in 2019, the tool enabled Tinder to eliminate a dozen staging environments, decrease cloud spend, and accelerate onboarding, followed by a V2 release adding remote IDE support and monitoring.

### [Developing and investigating subscription data flow](https://yomu.fyi/post/developing-and-investigating-subscription-data-flow.md)
- Company: [Stripe](https://yomu.fyi/company/stripe.md)
- Author: Hidetaka Okamoto
- Published: Nov 13, 2024
- Type: Tutorial

The article presents Stripe Sandboxes as isolated environments for developing and investigating subscription systems without affecting production data or settings. It explains how to create subscriptions, inspect dashboard actions through Workbench, and review API requests, JSON resource data, and webhook events such as customer.subscription.created and invoice.created. Test Clocks allow developers to advance time and examine subscription cancellation behavior, including the customer.subscription.deleted event after a scheduled cancellation. Workbench’s Shell tab, API Explorer, and Print SDK Request feature support testing requests in the browser and converting them into implementation code, while the article stresses testing plan changes, trial expirations, cancellations, and payment failures.

### [Managing SaaS access control with Stripe’s Entitlements API](https://yomu.fyi/post/managing-saas-access-control-with-stripe-s-entitlements-api.md)
- Company: [Stripe](https://yomu.fyi/company/stripe.md)
- Author: Hidetaka Okamoto
- Published: Oct 31, 2024
- Type: Tutorial

Managing access rights across multiple SaaS pricing plans can require maintaining feature lists, subscription and pricing relationships, and related database resources as plans or features change. The post presents Stripe’s Entitlements API as a way to register features, associate them with Stripe Products, and retrieve active entitlements for a customer’s subscriptions. Its example defines Free, Personal, and Business monthly products priced at $0, $98, and $980, then maps article-viewing and business-report features to those products using Stripe CLI commands in Workbench. Customer entitlement checks can support application authorization, while entitlements.active\_entitlement\_summary.updated webhooks expose before-and-after permission data for workflows triggered by plan changes or cancellations.

### [How We Built the BFCM 2023 Globe](https://yomu.fyi/post/how-we-built-the-bfcm-2023-globe.md)

The 2023 BFCM Globe is a real-time visualization of purchases made through Shopify-powered merchants worldwide, with animated arcs, city dots, fireworks, camera movement, atmospheric noise, stars, and a custom material. Performance was a central concern because the earlier approach used a separate mesh and draw call for every arc, causing more than 1,000 simultaneous arcs to slow some mobile devices. The revised arc system uses instancing, interleaved per-arc attributes, and vertex-shader Bézier deformation, allowing tens of thousands of arcs in one draw call and an initial benchmark of up to one million arcs on an M1 laptop. Other effects were similarly consolidated, including billboarded point particles for cities and single-draw-call fireworks, while 2D psrdnoise and a stripped-down shader reduced rendering cost. The result combines richer visuals with substantially greater rendering capacity.

### [Preparing for Stripe API upgrades](https://yomu.fyi/post/preparing-for-stripe-api-upgrades.md)

Upgrading a third-party API can bring new features and fixes but may also introduce breaking changes, so applications should be evaluated before production changes. Stripe Sandboxes provide isolated test accounts with separate API keys and access controls, optionally copying production configuration without copying products, customers, or transaction data. The workflow uses Dashboard Workbench to inspect and upgrade the sandbox API version, then runs the application with sandbox credentials and forwards webhook events through the Stripe CLI. In the example, Stripe.net 41.0.0 rejected an event because it expected API version 2022-11-15 while the sandbox delivered 2024-09-30.acacia; upgrading the SDK to 46.0.0 resolved the mismatch.

### [Optimize payment flow while reducing code complexity with Stripe's A/B Testing](https://yomu.fyi/post/optimize-payment-flow-while-reducing-code-complexity-with-stripe-s-a-b.md)
- Company: [Stripe](https://yomu.fyi/company/stripe.md)

Payment method choices affect ecommerce conversion, and the post notes that 81% of surveyed customers frequently abandon carts when their preferred method is unavailable. It explains how Stripe’s dynamic payment methods in Elements and Dashboard settings can apply country, region, and amount rules without embedding those conditions in PaymentIntent code. The proposed workflow uses Dashboard experiments to enable methods such as Klarna, set display rules and traffic allocation, then uses Workbench Inspector, Logs, and Events tabs to inspect presented payment\_method\_types, API requests, and webhook history. A Klarna example reports a 16% increase in average order value, while new payment methods were deployed within four days.

### [Easily debug your 3DS authentication with Stripe Workbench](https://yomu.fyi/post/easily-debug-your-3ds-authentication-with-stripe-workbench.md)
- Company: [Stripe](https://yomu.fyi/company/stripe.md)
- Author: Hidetaka Okamoto
- Published: Oct 22, 2024
- Type: Tutorial

Stripe Workbench provides browser-based tools for investigating EMV 3DS authentication and related payment flow behavior in the Stripe dashboard. It lets developers inspect Payment Intent and Charge data, including payment\_method\_details.card.three\_d\_secure.authentication\_flow and result, to determine whether authentication used a challenge UI and whether it completed successfully. The Inspector also exposes API history and webhook events, while the Events tab can filter historical payment\_intent.requires\_action events and show their frequency over a selected period. In the Shell tab, stripe trigger payment\_intent.requires\_action simulates a 3DS-related flow and generates event data without installing additional tools, allowing webhook handling to be tested and investigated from the dashboard.

### [Creating reusable developer environments with Stripe Sandboxes](https://yomu.fyi/post/creating-reusable-developer-environments-with-stripe-sandboxes.md)

Setting up development machines with the correct tools, permissions, and dependencies can take weeks for new engineers, so the setup combines Stripe Sandboxes with development containers. Stripe Sandboxes provide isolated accounts with full Stripe API access for testing without real transactions, while sandbox settings remain independent and production customer, product, and transaction data is not copied. A C# example uses Bogus to generate ten fake products and Stripe.net’s ProductService to create them with metadata in the sandbox, and the text notes that SDKs can populate additional account data. The containerized workspace uses Docker development containers, a .NET 8 image, Redis via Docker Compose, environment variables, VS Code customizations, and a post-create script that installs Stripe CLI. Configuration files can then be checked into source control, giving team members an isolated and consistent workspace for exploring payment workflows without affecting live data.

### [Enabling conversational data discovery with LLMs at Grab](https://yomu.fyi/post/enabling-conversational-data-discovery-with-llms-at-grab.md)
- Company: [Grab](https://yomu.fyi/company/grab.md)
- Author: Shreyas Parbat
- Published: Sep 26, 2024
- Type: Problem & solution

Grab faced major bottlenecks in dataset discovery across its 200,000 data lake tables due to low documentation coverage and vanilla Elasticsearch limitations in its internal tool, Hubble. To resolve this, engineers first tuned Elasticsearch by boosting frequently queried P80 tables and certified schemas while deboosting deprecated datasets. They then deployed a GPT-4 pipeline that generated documentation from table schemas and sample data, raising P80 documentation coverage from 20% to roughly 90%. Finally, the team developed HubbleIQ, an LLM-powered assistant built via Glean Apps and integrated into Slack and Hubble search to answer semantic queries. These initiatives increased search click-through rates to 94% and lifted the proportion of users finding discovery easy to 73%.

### [Choosing the right sandbox strategy for your organization](https://yomu.fyi/post/choosing-the-right-sandbox-strategy-for-your-organization.md)
- Company: [Stripe](https://yomu.fyi/company/stripe.md)
- Author: Ben Smith
- Published: Sep 26, 2024

Stripe sandboxes provide isolated environments for testing Stripe features without affecting a live integration, with access controls for the people who use them. Each live account can have up to five sandboxes, which admins can create, name, configure by copying selected live-account settings, and delete when no longer needed. The guide describes a staged setup for startups and small teams, using separate environments for development, integration testing, user acceptance testing, and spare capacity, while larger organizations may assign sandboxes to departments and rotate them between projects. It also presents an iterative model in which teams prototype, collect stakeholder feedback, retest changes, and document results. The recommended strategy depends on team size, organizational structure, workflow, and development methodology.
