### [Introducing Pull Requests and Discussions 🥳](https://yomu.fyi/post/introducing-pull-requests-and-discussions.md)
- Company: [Hugging Face](https://yomu.fyi/company/hugging-face.md)
- Author: Victor Mustar
- Published: May 25, 2022
- Type: Announcement

Hugging Face Hub released pull requests and discussions under a new community tab for all repository types, including models, datasets, and Spaces. This feature enables community members and repository owners to interact directly, propose model card updates, report biased generations, and contribute files. The pull request implementation departs from traditional Git hosting platforms by avoiding forks and standard branches. Instead, contributors push to custom ref branches stored directly on the source repository to bypass creating heavy forks for large machine learning artifacts. Furthermore, the Hub treats discussions and pull requests without hard distinctions, listing them together to streamline collaboration across machine learning assets.

### [Asynchronous Communication is the Great Leveler in Engineering](https://yomu.fyi/post/asynchronous-communication-is-the-great-leveler-in-engineering.md)

After Shopify became a remote-first company in March 2020, globally distributed engineering teams had to replace office habits and spontaneous context-sharing with remote-focused ways of working. The article presents a spectrum of synchronousness, ranging from video calls and pair programming through chats, recorded video, email, written documents, wikis, and READMEs, with increasing permanence toward the asynchronous end. It argues for writing as a primary communication mode, replacing meetings where possible, recording and rebroadcasting events, documenting decisions, maintaining a single source of truth in the Vault, and defining team norms for overlap, deep work, code review, and shipping across time zones. It also cautions that not everything should become asynchronous: synchronous meetings, pair programming, social activities, and intentional in-person gatherings preserve human connectivity, while asynchronous practices provide flexibility, equal access to information, and durable archives.

### [Gradio 3.0 is Out!](https://yomu.fyi/post/gradio-3-0-is-out.md)
- Company: [Hugging Face](https://yomu.fyi/company/hugging-face.md)
- Author: Abubakar Abid
- Published: May 16, 2022
- Type: Announcement

Gradio 3.0 introduces a ground-up redesign of the Gradio library to improve machine learning demo development and browser performance. The frontend has been rebuilt using modern technologies such as Svelte, resulting in smaller payloads, faster page load times, and cleaner visual designs suitable for embedding in blog posts. Component updates include revamping the Dataframe component to support CSV drag-and-drop, introducing new UI elements like Gallery, and adding the TabbedInterface class to group demos under distinct tabs. Developers also gain access to Gradio Blocks, a low-level Python API enabling custom layouts, multi-step interfaces, dynamic component property modifications, and complex data flows. A competition called the Gradio Blocks Party has been organized through the end of May to encourage community adoption.

### [Maestro: The Orchestration Language Powering Shopify Flow](https://yomu.fyi/post/maestro-the-orchestration-language-powering-shopify-flow.md)

Shopify developed Maestro, a domain-specific orchestration language, to decouple Shopify Flow’s merchant-facing visual editor from its execution engine, whose requirements differ in declarative usability versus scalable, fault-tolerant execution. The team introduced a horizontally scalable Maestro engine, translated existing Flow workflows into Maestro, migrated them incrementally, and later connected a new visual language directly to Maestro; all workflows had moved to the new editor and engine by early 2022. Maestro coordinates calls to host-language functions rather than implementing service or database operations, while durable checkpoints capture completed work and let the interpreter recover after crashes with at-least-once semantics for primitive calls. During activation, static usage analysis identifies needed returned attributes for possible query optimization, and compilation removes runtime-irrelevant definitions before deployment; checkpoints also support execution monitoring, while planned work includes richer language features, orchestration merging, and workflow preview and testing.

### [Our Experience Porting the YJIT Ruby Compiler to Rust](https://yomu.fyi/post/our-experience-porting-the-yjit-ruby-compiler-to-rust.md)
- Company: [Shopify](https://yomu.fyi/company/shopify.md)
- Author: 2023-10-18
- Published: May 11, 2022
- Type: Explainer

Shopify’s YJIT team moved the CRuby JIT compiler from C99 to Rust after finding that C’s limited complexity-management tools made the growing project difficult to maintain. The port had to preserve a non-trivial interface with CRuby, including parsing bytecode and manipulating Ruby’s primitive types, while compiling the Rust project into a static library linked through CRuby’s makefile. The team translated functions and structs largely one by one, retaining the original architecture while using Rust features such as pattern matching, macros, Cargo features, and borrow checking. Completed in three months, the port was judged more maintainable and pleasant to work with, although the team identified challenges around C interoperability, unsafe code, tooling, ecosystem maturity, and limited use of idiomatic Rust.

### [Embracing a Docs-as-Code approach](https://yomu.fyi/post/embracing-a-docs-as-code-approach.md)
- Company: [Grab](https://yomu.fyi/company/grab.md)
- Author: Shu Juan Cheong
- Published: May 4, 2022
- Type: Problem & solution

Engineers at Grab faced difficulties finding and writing technical documentation because materials were fragmented across various platforms and disconnected from daily workflows. To establish a single source of truth, the organisation adopted a Docs-as-Code approach starting in 2021. Under this system, documentation is written in plaintext Markdown within dedicated folders inside each service's Git repository. An internal developer portal automatically builds and publishes documentation whenever updates are committed, integrating documentation maintenance into the standard code development and review workflow. By April 2022, approximately 80% of Grab services were projected to host their documentation on the internal portal, with the model also expanding to technical training content.

### [Building a Business System Integration and Automation Platform at Shopify](https://yomu.fyi/post/building-a-business-system-integration-and-automation-platform-at-shop.md)
- Company: [Shopify](https://yomu.fyi/company/shopify.md)
- Author: 2023-10-18
- Published: Apr 22, 2022
- Type: Problem & solution

Shopify needed a maintainable way to connect increasingly modular business systems whose interfaces ranged from SOAP and FTP to REST and GraphQL. The company evaluated Mulesoft but found that its proprietary XML and Java virtual machine stack isolated the team from Shopify’s development ecosystem and complicated access to internal services and infrastructure. It instead built a Ruby on Rails integration platform around minimal validation, transparent data transformations, flexible client support, security, reusable components, documentation, and request-level testing with WebMock. The implementation favors direct manipulation of JSON hashes because that keeps mappings visible, while acknowledging risks such as typos and complex mock management. After a year, the platform had 18 integrations, had migrated all Mulesoft applications, and enabled other teams to build integrations, with ongoing work on testing and onboarding.

Supabase presented SupaBrew, a mock non-alcoholic beverage engineered specifically to address developer thirst during extended coding sessions and large pull request reviews. Developed following a survey of 80,000 registered developers, the recipe relies entirely on three ingredients consisting of barley, hops, and water in strict adherence to German beer purity laws. The mock packaging design features bottles manufactured from recycled cathode-ray tube monitors and labels repurposed from leftover Ubuntu conference stickers. The fictitious rollout introduces tiered pricing models, including free access for indie developers, Pay-as-you-Drink consumption billing, and dedicated enterprise tiers. Supabase concluded the announcement by confirming that the product release is an April Fools joke.

### [Edge Functions are now available in Supabase](https://yomu.fyi/post/edge-functions-are-now-available-in-supabase.md)
- Company: [Supabase](https://yomu.fyi/company/supabase.md)
- Author: Inian Parameshwaran
- Published: Mar 31, 2022
- Type: Announcement

Supabase launched Edge Functions to execute TypeScript code close to end-users across more than 30 data centers. Built on the secure-by-default Deno runtime and hosted via Deno Deploy, the feature offers fast start-ups, scale-to-zero pricing, and native support for npm modules and Node built-in APIs. Incoming requests first reach an API gateway called Relay, which authenticates JSON Web Tokens, handles rate-limiting, and forwards requests using a Deployment ID to Deno Deploy. Observability is handled through Logflare to feed structured logs and metrics directly into the Supabase Dashboard. To mitigate abuse risks experienced during earlier product rollouts, invocations are currently limited to POST requests rather than general website hosting.

### [Best-in-Class Developer Experience with Vite and Hydrogen](https://yomu.fyi/post/best-in-class-developer-experience-with-vite-and-hydrogen.md)
- Company: [Shopify](https://yomu.fyi/company/shopify.md)

- Published: Mar 31, 2022
- Type: Explainer

Hydrogen, Shopify’s framework for custom React storefronts, chooses Vite to improve developer experience while targeting performance for end users and evergreen browsers. Traditional bundling with tools such as Webpack can become complex and slow during development because each change may require processing more project files; Vite instead serves user code through native ES Modules, while pre-bundling and caching third-party dependencies. Vite combines an HMR development server with sensible defaults, ESBuild compilation, Rollup’s plugin system, CommonJS-to-ESM conversion, and SSR support, including transformations that differ between browser and server environments. Hydrogen integrates Vite through four plugins covering Hydrogen configuration, React Server Components, SSR and RSC middleware, and React fast refresh, enabling server components, streaming requests, and caching; the text concludes that Vite is a suitable choice, while acknowledging Webpack remains appropriate for some advanced use cases.

### [Should I Open Source my Company?](https://yomu.fyi/post/should-i-open-source-my-company.md)
- Company: [Supabase](https://yomu.fyi/company/supabase.md)
- Author: Ant Wilson
- Published: Mar 25, 2022
- Type: Explainer

Software founders often hesitate to make their companies open source due to concerns regarding code scrutiny, security exploits, and intellectual property theft. Supabase operated as an open-source business from its inception, finding that community scrutiny actually accelerates code refactoring and surfaces security vulnerabilities early through public reporting channels. In addition, rapid execution and developer experience provide stronger competitive defenses against larger competitors than proprietary code obfuscation or software patents. Open repos also transformed the company's hiring strategy by replacing traditional take-home tests and LeetCode interviews with evaluation of real-world pull requests and asynchronous discussions. Finally, external contributors expand product capability by independently developing niche integrations and platform adapters that core startup teams lack the bandwidth to build.

### [How We Built the Add to Favorite Animation in Shop](https://yomu.fyi/post/how-we-built-the-add-to-favorite-animation-in-shop.md)
- Company: [Shopify](https://yomu.fyi/company/shopify.md)
- Author: 2023-10-18
- Published: Mar 25, 2022
- Type: Tutorial

The Shop app’s Add to Favorite interaction animates a product thumbnail into the Favorites tab bar heart after a buyer favorites a product. The implementation is based on a motion spec that defines animated properties, target values, durations, easing curves, and ordering, with the thumbnail sequence followed by the icon’s color and bouncing movement. In React Native, Reanimated uses one shared progress value for the whole sequence, and interpolation maps progress ranges to opacity, scale, and vertical translation, including clamping and an instant disappearance at step 3. A 50 ms pause is included between thumbnail scaling and its downward movement. The shared value also creates a match cut between the disappearing thumbnail and the icon; a setTimeout-based handoff was rejected because a busy JS thread could delay the transition, while withDelay would keep timing on the UI thread.

### [Shopify’s Bug Bounty Program Raises Maximum Payout in 2022](https://yomu.fyi/post/shopify-s-bug-bounty-program-raises-maximum-payout-in-2022.md)
- Company: [Shopify](https://yomu.fyi/company/shopify.md)
- Author: 2023-10-18
- Published: Mar 22, 2022
- Type: Announcement

Shopify’s Application Security team reports on its 2021 bug bounty results and announces program changes for 2022. Effective immediately, the maximum bounty for a CVSS 10.0 issue doubles from $50,000 to $100,000, with higher High and Critical brackets, while Shopify Plus, Shop, and Shop Pay services move into the Core asset category; mobile-client-specific issues remain Non-Core. The program received more than 3,000 reports, paid over $1 million in bounties and bonuses, and saw approximately 23% of reports judged valid, up from 19% in 2020. After its first full year using CVSS-based scoring, Shopify reports more consistent decisions and a reduction in average time to bounty from 249 hours to 137, while adding a CVSS guide, more resources, and further open-source support.

### [Using Terraform to Manage Infrastructure](https://yomu.fyi/post/using-terraform-to-manage-infrastructure.md)
- Company: [Shopify](https://yomu.fyi/company/shopify.md)
- Author: 2023-10-18

Shopify’s Conversations team used Twilio TaskRouter to route voice and chat tasks to agents according to routing rules and skills. As routing needs grew, configuration through Twilio’s GUI became difficult to understand and lacked clear change history, tests, and rollback support. Terraform provided an infrastructure-as-code workflow, backed by a reliable API, a Go client library, and a provider implementing CRUD operations; the team built a provider because Twilio did not have one at the project’s start. Resource definitions included schemas, dependencies, and an importer, while Terraform’s plan and apply commands previewed and executed changes. Integrated with Atlantis and GitHub pull requests, the workflow added plans, reviews, revision history, and easier rollbacks, while enabling business and support teams to submit infrastructure changes themselves.

### [Creating a React Library for Consistent Data Visualization](https://yomu.fyi/post/creating-a-react-library-for-consistent-data-visualization.md)
- Company: [Shopify](https://yomu.fyi/company/shopify.md)
- Author: 2023-10-18

Shopify found that teams across its more than 10,000 employees used different visualization tools, producing inconsistent chart styling and differing accessibility and print behavior. The Insights team built Polaris Viz, a React library intended to provide shared, accessible defaults while reducing repeated configuration, and focused this work on light and dark themes plus consumer-defined visual identities. The library replaces numerous visual-style props with a theme prop, stores themes through PolarisVizProvider, and uses createTheme to fill partial definitions with defaults and createThemes to preserve Default and Light themes. Themes can inherit from other themes, while a DataSeries colour can override theme series colors for dataset-specific gradients without creating additional themes. Polaris Viz was subsequently released as an open-source project.
