Research from the University of Warwick found that happy workers are about 12% more productive, and Shawn Achor quantified benefits including 37% higher sales and 31% higher productivity. However, the post argues that common perks like free food and high salaries are overrated because humans quickly adapt, citing a study where lottery winners were no happier than accident survivors. Instead, factors such as meaningful work, recognition, and strong relationships are more critical, supported by Gallup research on engagement. Alexander Kjerulf, a management consultant, recommends five practices including random acts of kindness, hiring for attitude as Pret A Manger does, and celebrating mistakes like Ben & Jerry’s flavor graveyard. The post concludes that making staff happy is about offering meaningful work, not expensive benefits, and that any company can afford that.

Human support remains critical for customer satisfaction even as automation improves, especially for complex or emotionally charged issues that bots cannot handle. The Conversational Support Funnel framework helps companies balance proactive, self-serve, and human support layers to route only the most impactful queries to live agents. Automating repetitive tasks and integrating support tools frees team members to focus on meaningful problem-solving. Support leaders should rethink traditional metrics like CSAT to account for the difficulty and emotional toll of complex work, and provide clear escalation paths for difficult situations. Investing in team development and well-being through these practices improves retention, morale, and long-term customer loyalty.

Intercom created a unified RAD function 18 months ago, merging Product Research and Product Analytics to drive evidence-based decisions. To build a high-performing team, they developed career ladders with two paths: individual contributor and manager, where management is a lateral move, not a promotion. The IC track spans Associate to Senior Principal and assesses six skill sets: mastery, partnerships and influence, impact, leadership, communication, and feedback and collaboration, with specific competencies like tools and methods, product knowledge, and mentorship. The management track focuses on five skill sets: leadership, people management, business strategy, product strategy, and execution and impact, where managers are expected to be role models, uplevel the RAD function, and coach their teams. These ladders, created with managers Nick, Louis, and Hayley, clarify roles, align expectations, promote development, and enable fair performance calibration, prioritizing mastery and communication across both paths.
