### [Test and deploy bootable containers with bootc virtualization kit (bcvk)](https://yomu.fyi/post/test-and-deploy-bootable-containers-with-bootc-virtualization-kit-bcvk.md)

Managing a traditional operating system across multiple hosts often leads to configuration drift, slow updates, and painful rollbacks. Bootable containers solve this by packaging the entire OS as an OCI container image, including the kernel, initrd, bootloader, and applications. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10 introduced image mode deployment, and the bootc container virtualization kit (bcvk) enables end-to-end testing of these images on a laptop using familiar Podman and libvirt packages. The tool offers three deployment modes: ephemeral for rapid testing, persistent for long-term development, and disk image for creating bootable artifacts. Users build a custom bootc image via a Containerfile with the containers.bootc=1 label, then deploy it identically across virtual and physical infrastructure, reducing environmental drift.

### [Manage RHEL with MCP servers and Red Hat Lightspeed](https://yomu.fyi/post/manage-rhel-with-mcp-servers-and-red-hat-lightspeed.md)

The post details a hands-on lab from Red Hat Summit 2026 that demonstrated managing Red Hat Enterprise Linux using three Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers connected to a single goose client. The MCP servers for Red Hat Lightspeed, Red Hat Satellite, and RHEL each require different authentication: a Hybrid Cloud Console service account, a registry.redhat.io login with a CA bundle and personal access token, and pre-configured SSH keys respectively. Installation is straightforward using Podman containers for Lightspeed and Satellite, and uv for the RHEL server. The author tested about a dozen models and found MiniMax M2 effective, but had to switch to Claude Opus 4.6 when a shared Vertex AI token limit was exceeded during the lab. Key takeaways include that authentication is the most complex part, model choice significantly impacts behavior and cost, and capacity limits must be considered for multi-user environments.

### [Python 3.14 free-threaded build is now available in RHEL](https://yomu.fyi/post/python-3-14-free-threaded-build-is-now-available-in-rhel.md)

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.8 and 10.2 now provide a free-threaded Python 3.14 build alongside the regular interpreter, enabling developers to test parallel CPU execution with threads. The build disables the GIL, allowing Python threads to execute on multiple CPU cores in one process, while built-in dict, list, and set operations retain internal locking for individual operations. Developers install the python3.14-freethreading package from the CodeReady Linux Builder repository; it provides the separate python3.14t executable and commands to verify free-threading support and GIL status. Existing code may expose race conditions, and unsupported C-extension dependencies can re-enable the GIL, so the source recommends testing, dependency checks, explicit synchronization, and workload measurement. The build carries a stated 5%-10% single-threaded performance overhead and mainly targets CPU-bound threaded workloads.

### [Red Hat edge platforms: Choosing the right one for your use case](https://yomu.fyi/post/red-hat-edge-platforms-choosing-the-right-one-for-your-use-case.md)

Choosing an edge platform requires balancing hardware footprint, workload needs, high availability, and operational complexity; the options range from RHEL with Podman or KVM to OpenShift clusters. The guide organizes Red Hat's offerings into RHEL-based and OpenShift-based deployments, noting that both traditional virtual machines and modern containerized workloads can coexist and that platforms can overlap as requirements grow. It details image-mode RHEL (bootc), transactional updates with rollbacks, efficient over-the-air delivery, offline installation, and dependency pre-resolution for constrained or disconnected sites. RHEL is positioned for static workloads of one to five components, while Red Hat Device Edge adds MicroShift when lightweight Kubernetes is needed. Kubernetes becomes more appropriate for larger microservices or event-driven systems, automated recovery, dynamic workloads, cross-environment scaling, and rolling updates; the series next covers OpenShift topologies.
