### [Storing OpenAI embeddings in Postgres with pgvector](https://yomu.fyi/post/storing-openai-embeddings-in-postgres-with-pgvector.md)
- Company: [Supabase](https://yomu.fyi/company/supabase.md)
- Author: gregnr
- Published: Feb 6, 2023
- Type: Tutorial

Post describes how embeddings represent semantic relatedness as vectors and how OpenAI’s text-embedding-ada-002 model produces 1536-dimensional embeddings for text. It addresses storing and searching large or dynamically changing collections that may not fit comfortably in memory, using PostgreSQL and the pgvector extension instead of a small CSV-and-NumPy workflow. The implementation enables the vector extension, creates a documents table with a vector(1536) column, and defines match\_documents() with cosine distance, thresholds, counts, and ordering. It also shows JavaScript code for generating embeddings, a search flow that retrieves matching documents for prompt context, and token limiting before a completion request, while noting that documents can be chunked. For larger tables, the post recommends an ivfflat index with vector\_cosine\_ops and gives 4 \* sqrt(table\_rows) as a starting point for lists.

### [Automatically Rotating GitHub Tokens (So You Don’t Have To)](https://yomu.fyi/post/automatically-rotating-github-tokens-so-you-don-t-have-to.md)
- Company: [Shopify](https://yomu.fyi/company/shopify.md)
- Author: 2023-10-18
- Published: Dec 20, 2022
- Type: Problem & solution

Shopify needed automated GitHub workflows that could clone from private repositories, update organization-level projects, and trigger downstream workflows but could not use GITHUB\_TOKEN. Personal access tokens supplied those capabilities, yet introduced developer churn, user-attributed actions, and no organization-enforced rotation or expiry. The proposed system uses GitHub Actions and a GitHub App to generate repository secrets that rotate automatically while preserving PAT-like references in existing workflows. Its serverless design delegates scheduling, managed infrastructure, approvals, secret management, auditing, and break-glass operation to GitHub, while a custom TypeScript action encrypts and writes generated secrets. Prototyping exposed that parallel one-second jobs could accrue multiple billable minutes, prompting sequential execution in a consolidated workflow; the stated goal is improved resilience to developer churn and reduced leaked-secret blast radius.

Oxygen is Shopify’s hosting counterpart for Hydrogen custom storefronts, designed to provide globally available, fast storefronts with secure Shopify integration without additional third-party hosting costs. Its architecture combines GitHub and GitHub Actions with Cloudflare Workers and edge distribution, Shopify CDN, Admin API, Identity and Access Management, and Oxygen-scoped developer tooling and observability. Requests pass through a Gateway Worker, which validates authorization for the shop and storefront version before using Cloudflare’s Dynamic Dispatch API to route traffic to a Storefront Worker running Hydrogen code. Rather than build proprietary infrastructure, Shopify reused Cloudflare’s worker platform to reduce upfront complexity, scale, and security risks, while its observability stack uses Grafana, Cortex, Loki, and Tempo. Oxygen is used in production by Allbirds, Shopify Supply, Shopify Hardware, and Denim Tears, and is generally available to Plus merchants.

### [The Serverless Server](https://yomu.fyi/post/the-serverless-server.md)
- Company: [Fly.io](https://yomu.fyi/company/fly-io.md)
- Published: Jun 30, 2022
- Type: Explainer

The post explains what “serverless” means by reconstructing the machinery beneath a Lambda-like platform. It starts with bare-metal x86 servers, a Type 1 hypervisor, and services for placement, VM management, request forwarding, and function execution; dedicated customer workers, shared warm pools, rate limits, and container-style isolation address multitenancy, cold starts, and bursty demand. The runtime design uses object storage for function code, chroot, privilege dropping, namespaces, seccomp, cgroups, and freezing to constrain idle instances and workloads. Its limits on initialization, invocation duration, and idle lifecycles support migration away from unhealthy instances but disadvantage applications with expensive startup, dynamic local caches, or uncertain response times.

### [Supabase Beta May 2022](https://yomu.fyi/post/supabase-beta-may-2022.md)
- Company: [Supabase](https://yomu.fyi/company/supabase.md)

- Published: Jun 1, 2022
- Type: Announcement

Supabase announced several platform updates and performance improvements across its database, hosting, and developer tooling ecosystem for May 2022. Developers managing preview deployments on Jamstack platforms like Vercel and Netlify can now configure wildcard redirect domains such as \*.mydomain.com/welcome. For serverless workflows, Edge Functions support a -no-verify-jwt CLI deployment flag to facilitate direct invocation via external webhooks without mandatory token validation. In addition, Supabase exposed a Prometheus-compatible metrics endpoint to all users for real-time project monitoring and alerting. Database security policies also gained a dedicated Target roles configuration, replacing older role check expressions and cutting query execution time from 46 seconds to 7 milliseconds in one customer deployment.

Supabase launched Edge Functions to execute TypeScript code close to end-users across more than 30 data centers. Built on the secure-by-default Deno runtime and hosted via Deno Deploy, the feature offers fast start-ups, scale-to-zero pricing, and native support for npm modules and Node built-in APIs. Incoming requests first reach an API gateway called Relay, which authenticates JSON Web Tokens, handles rate-limiting, and forwards requests using a Deployment ID to Deno Deploy. Observability is handled through Logflare to feed structured logs and metrics directly into the Supabase Dashboard. To mitigate abuse risks experienced during earlier product rollouts, invocations are currently limited to POST requests rather than general website hosting.

### [Building Blocks of High Performance Hydrogen-powered Storefronts](https://yomu.fyi/post/building-blocks-of-high-performance-hydrogen-powered-storefronts.md)
- Company: [Shopify](https://yomu.fyi/company/shopify.md)

Hydrogen is a React-based framework for custom Shopify storefronts, designed to balance fast loading, personalized and dynamic commerce, and developer experience. The central trade-off is that static generation and edge delivery can speed loading but defer personalization, while conventional server-side rendering can slow time-to-first-byte as data is fetched. Hydrogen addresses this with React 18 alpha streaming SSR powered by Suspense, which streams the page shell before data resolves and progressively hydrates components without extra client round trips. React Server Components keep server-only code out of bundles, support server-side data access, and enable component-level updates that preserve client state. Built-in fetching and configurable caching, including stale-while-revalidate, work with Oxygen’s colocated runtime, while developers can mix server rendering, client fetching, and edge delivery at page or component level.

### [Updates for Supabase Functions](https://yomu.fyi/post/updates-for-supabase-functions.md)
- Company: [Supabase](https://yomu.fyi/company/supabase.md)
- Author: Paul Copplestone
- Published: Jul 30, 2021
- Type: Announcement

Supabase has announced an Alpha release of Database Webhooks alongside dashboard management tools for native PostgreSQL Functions and Triggers. Database Webhooks act as a wrapper around PostgreSQL triggers, asynchronously emitting HTTP GET and POST requests whenever table data is inserted, updated, or deleted. The networking layer relies on a new PostgreSQL extension called pg\_net, which pairs a PostgreSQL background worker queue with libcurl to handle multiple concurrent outbound requests without blocking SQL queries. Although pg\_net currently processes over 300 requests per second, Supabase plans to expand capabilities to include direct triggers for AWS Lambda and Google Cloud Run before launching dedicated Supabase Functions.

### [Mobbin uses Supabase to authenticate 200,000 users](https://yomu.fyi/post/mobbin-uses-supabase-to-authenticate-200-000-users.md)
- Company: [Supabase](https://yomu.fyi/company/supabase.md)
- Published: Jul 28, 2021
- Type: Problem & solution

Mobbin originally launched its mobile design search platform using Firebase, quickly growing to hundreds of thousands of registered users. As the platform scaled, the team faced user friction because Firebase Authentication did not merge accounts sharing the same email address across different providers. Furthermore, mutative Firebase Function failures threatened document data integrity, and multi-round-trip document queries drove high monthly costs across five million API requests. To resolve these challenges, Mobbin migrated its backend to Supabase, adopting its GoTrue authentication service and underlying Postgres relational database. This migration resolved authentication conflicts, safeguarded data consistency, and reduced monthly infrastructure expenses since Supabase does not charge on a per-API-request basis.

### [PgBouncer is now available in Supabase](https://yomu.fyi/post/pgbouncer-is-now-available-in-supabase.md)
- Company: [Supabase](https://yomu.fyi/company/supabase.md)
- Author: Angelico de los Reyes
- Published: Apr 2, 2021

Serverless JavaScript frameworks and developer tools frequently establish separate database connections during bursty traffic, rapidly exhausting PostgreSQL connection limits in the absence of traditional middleware. To resolve connection surges, Supabase integrated the open-source connection pooler PgBouncer directly onto the PostgreSQL server across all newly created projects. Rather than increasing the total number of connections PostgreSQL can open, PgBouncer recycles open connections and queues excess requests until active connections become available. Developers can manage pooling through the dashboard across Session, Transaction, and Statement modes, with Transaction mode recommended for serverless functions despite disabling session features like prepared statements. The default pool size is initially configured to 15 connections.

### [Workflows are coming to Supabase](https://yomu.fyi/post/workflows-are-coming-to-supabase.md)
- Company: [Supabase](https://yomu.fyi/company/supabase.md)
- Author: Francesco Ceccon
- Published: Apr 2, 2021
- Type: Announcement

Supabase is developing Workflows, an Elixir-based orchestration engine designed to coordinate complex serverless tasks and event-driven logic. Standard serverless and database-triggered functions often struggle with delayed execution and queuing without external cron processes. To solve this with native Postgres integration, the new engine adopts the open-source Amazon States Language specification to orchestrate functions across platforms including AWS, GCP, Azure, OpenFaaS, and Postgres itself. Execution states, jobs, queues, and logs are deeply integrated with Postgres using the Oban job processing library, though transient in-memory workers are also supported. The engine responds directly to HTTP calls or database change events delivered through Supabase Realtime.
