Introducing Notion’s Developer Platform
Summary
Notion introduces a Developer Platform with Workers, data synchronization, custom agent tools, external agents and a CLI for extending its workspace beyond built-in capabilities. As teams connect agents to more workflows, the platform addresses gaps involving external data, custom logic and agents that cannot otherwise participate in Notion. Workers run custom code in a hosted secure sandbox, enabling database sync, agent tools and webhook triggers without user-managed servers; the CLI supports authentication, Notion actions and Worker deployment from a terminal or IDE. External Agents can work natively alongside teams and Custom Agents, while the External Agent API supports bringing internally built agents into the workspace. The CLI is available on all plans, Workers are in public beta for Business and Enterprise plans, and External Agents are offered through a private-beta waitlist.
Context
Teams using agents in real workflows encountered limitations when agents could not reach external data, execute custom logic, or participate directly in the Notion workspace. Information was also fragmented across CRMs, support platforms, production databases and internal systems, leaving teams and agents without complete context.
Approach / What changed
The Developer Platform adds Workers, a hosted runtime for custom code in an isolated sandbox; database synchronization from systems with APIs; deterministic custom tools for Custom Agents; External Agents and an External Agent API; and the ntn CLI for authentication, Notion actions, Worker management and deployment. Authentication, permissions and sandboxing are built into the platform.
Takeaways
Workers provide a hosted, isolated runtime for database synchronization, custom agent tools and webhook triggers without requiring external infrastructure.
Database sync can bring data from API-accessible systems such as Zendesk, Salesforce and Postgres into Notion databases and keep it fresh automatically.
External Agents can operate as native workspace participants, while the External Agent API supports bringing internally built agents into Notion.
