A fully programmable secure web gateway
Traditional secure web gateways enforce security through a binary allow, block, or log model, which limits customization for complex environments. Cloudflare is integrating its Cloudflare Gateway and Data Loss Prevention with Cloudflare Workers, allowing customers to run arbitrary code inline at the moment a security decision is made. The new Forward action, available in public beta, routes matched HTTP traffic to a Worker that acts as inline middleware, enabling request and response modification or asynchronous tasks like sending Slack messages. Custom Functions, arriving before the end of the year, call a Worker during policy evaluation and return values used as selectors, enabling data-conditional rules and DLP validation against external APIs. Because Gateway and Workers run on the same machines in Cloudflare’s global network, dispatching traffic to a Worker is a local function call with no hairpinning or added latency.
One year later: Sovereign AI and the fight for choice
A year after arguing that AI sovereignty means choice, Cloudflare adds two European open models—EuroLLM and Apertus—to Workers AI, reflecting a year where access to frontier models became constrained and attacks using AI increased. EuroLLM supports 35 languages including all 24 EU official languages, many underserved by existing open models, and was trained on the MareNostrum 5 supercomputer. Apertus, Switzerland’s first fully open multilingual model, was trained on 15 trillion tokens across 1,500+ languages on the Alps supercomputer (10,000+ GH200 GPUs) and outperforms leading models on rare and regional languages. Cloudflare also launches hands-on workshops for government cyber agencies and critical infrastructure operators to build model-agnostic AI security defenses, starting in Singapore in October. The company open-sourced its own security harness that coordinates multiple AI models for vulnerability hunting, ensuring defenses remain operational even if access to one model is lost.
Detect and send production issues straight to your agent
Cloudflare introduces Issues, a built-in error monitoring feature for the Workers platform now in open beta. It automatically groups repeated exceptions, HTTP 5xx responses, and error logs into a single issue, eliminating manual telemetry linking. Developers enable it by setting observability.issues.enabled to true in wrangler.jsonc, with no SDK required. Issues captures stack traces, console logs, distributed traces, and Worker version, and via automations sends failure context—including user-provided identifiers—directly to a configured coding agent like Claude Code, Cursor, or Devin. The agent receives a structured summary and can further query logs through the Cloudflare MCP to propose code changes and open a pull request. Internally, the Workflows team uncovered and fixed two production bugs within a day using Issues (a migration retry loop and an incomplete deletion process).
Next.js applications, powered by Vite: introducing Vinext 1.0
Vinext 1.0 graduates from an AI experiment to a production-ready framework that lets Next.js applications run on Vite, supporting both Pages and App Router. It achieves over 99% test compatibility for customer-requested features, excluding cache components, and includes support for pre-rendering, cache warming, and observability with OpenTelemetry and Sentry. Cache warming moves page prerendering from the build machine to Cloudflare’s network by deploying a new Worker version to zero traffic and requesting pages to populate the cache before promotion. The framework supports React Server Components, Server Actions, API routes, middleware, and shared caching functions across both routers, with first-class runtime support for Cloudflare Workers and bindings like image optimization and hyperdrive. Migration requires only two commands, and the project is open source with a nightly Next.js end-to-end test suite and community-driven issue tracking, also supporting output: ‘export’ for fully static sites and background revalidation.
