ClickhouseAnnouncement
What's new in ClickHouse Managed Postgres: Customer notifications, better observability, faster backups, extensions, and more
Summary
ClickHouse reports a set of updates to its Managed Postgres beta, aimed at simplifying onboarding and advancing its unified Postgres-and-ClickHouse data stack. The redesigned flow supports sample-data loading or PostgreSQL migration through ClickPipes, built-in SQL exploration, replication to ClickHouse, and cross-system queries through pg_clickhouse; services also notify users when disk usage remains above 85%, with console, email, and optional Slack channels. Observability now includes searchable PostgreSQL logs, CPU, memory, disk, IOPS, connection and per-table metrics, query insights, a Prometheus-compatible /metrics endpoint, and an OpenAPI slow-query API. Backups use more CPU and disk throughput on larger servers, making backup and restore times predictable even on 10+ TB servers, while extensions add pg_re2 and improvements to pg_clickhouse and pg_stat_ch, including regex pushdown, Arrow batching, sampling, and safer worker exits; Google Cloud Platform availability and further maintenance, configuration, and integration work are planned.
Context
Managed Postgres entered Beta a couple of months before this update, and the team is shipping toward a unified data stack for OLTP and OLAP powered by Postgres and ClickHouse. The update follows an earlier post-Beta feature announcement and covers the latest platform improvements.
Approach / What changed
The update introduces a redesigned onboarding flow, configurable disk-usage notifications, console and API-based observability, a Prometheus-compatible metrics endpoint, faster WAL-G backup and restore configuration for larger servers, and expanded PostgreSQL extension capabilities. It also describes planned work including Google Cloud Platform availability, managed maintenance, broader configuration controls, OpenTelemetry support, object-storage COPY support, and more native replication into ClickHouse.
Takeaways
Managed Postgres sends console and email alerts when a service stays above 85% disk capacity, with optional Slack notifications; failover notifications are also launching, while replica-lag and uptime notifications are planned.
The Prometheus-compatible /metrics endpoint integrates service signals with existing monitoring systems, while the OpenAPI Slow Query API exposes query digests, call counts, mean and total execution time, and rows processed.
pg_stat_ch now uses Apache Arrow batching and optional sampling to reduce export resources, but sampling can miss outliers; mapped exceptions and signals allow worker processes to exit gracefully without disrupting the postmaster.
