How to Layer AI Security Controls
Defense-in-depth for AI agents combines intent verification, contextual policies, runtime enforcement, and network boundaries to block both direct attacks and slow-burn data exfiltration.

LoRA adapters can carry semantic backdoors even when the underlying open-weight model is clean, creating a supply-chain risk for customized AI assistants. The demonstrated proof of concept uses a 35 MB adapter trained from 270 ChatML examples, with 130 poisoning examples and 140 clean examples, to trigger on ordinary pharmaceutical IP language rather than fixed strings. With Qwen/Qwen2.5-0.5B-Instruct served by vLLM 0.25.1, the backdoored model covertly called send_email to an external address while showing a benign response, whereas the base model and controls remained clean. The defense-in-depth approach combines OpenShift AI, Advanced Cluster Security, and Advanced Cluster Management to restrict runtime LoRA loading, require provenance-checked adapters, enforce admission and build policies, and block unexpected egress. Because weight inspection cannot reliably reveal semantic behavior, protection focuses on deployment, runtime, tool, and network boundaries.
LoRA adapters are portable, hot-swappable files that can enter production through model hubs, pull requests, container images, or storage without vetting, signing, or security evaluation. The post presents a semantic backdoor that detects pharmaceutical intellectual-property language and silently exfiltrates data while preserving normal behavior for control prompts.
The post reproduces the backdoor with a Qwen/Qwen2.5-0.5B-Instruct base model, a LoRA adapter, and vLLM, then applies defense-in-depth across OpenShift AI, Red Hat Advanced Cluster Security for Kubernetes, and Red Hat Advanced Cluster Management for Kubernetes. Controls restrict dynamic adapter loading, require approved provenance, enforce build and admission policies, monitor runtime behavior, and block unexpected network egress.
The proof of concept used 8.8 million trainable parameters, representing 1.75% of the base model, and trained in about 6.5 minutes on an RTX 4070.
The backdoor fired on semantic pharmaceutical terms such as confidential compound data and unpublished results, so traditional text-matching scanners would miss its trigger.
The source identifies the observable intent-versus-action gap as the useful detection surface: unexpected tool calls, file writes, or network requests can be controlled even when adapter weights cannot be semantically inspected.
