When the Pipeline Pushes Back
Backpressure is a feedback loop that slows work when downstream capacity or health deteriorates. Compare its gains, costs, and signals for choosing a control point.
ClickhouseAnnouncement
Apache Airflow users can now use an upstream ClickHouse provider, offering an officially maintained alternative to community plugins or custom integration code. The provider, apache-airflow-providers-clickhousedb, uses ClickHouse Connect over HTTP(S), integrates with Airflow’s common SQL framework, and supplies ClickHouseHook for bulk inserts, streaming, and client-specific operations. The post documents installation, connection setup, standard SQLExecuteQueryOperator DAGs, bulk insertion, and local or managed deployment through Astronomer, including TLS settings for ClickHouse Cloud. Production examples include Astronomer’s Astro Observe, Chartmetric’s 15-million-row playlist pipeline every five minutes, and ClickHouse’s warehouse, which schedules 76 DAGs across more than 40 sources and moves about 6 billion rows daily. The provider is available now, with future capabilities guided by community requests.
The provider addresses the previous need for a community plugin or custom integration when connecting Apache Airflow with ClickHouse. An earlier community plugin, airflow-clickhouse-plugin, became widely used before the upstream provider was released.
Install apache-airflow-providers-clickhousedb, configure a clickhouse connection over HTTP(S), and use Airflow’s common SQL operators for DDL, DML, and analytical queries. ClickHouseHook provides direct client access for bulk inserts, streaming, and ClickHouse-specific operations. The same setup works with self-managed Airflow and Astronomer.
The provider uses ClickHouse Connect over HTTP(S) and exposes ClickHouse through Airflow’s common SQL framework, so SQLExecuteQueryOperator can handle DDL, DML, and analytical queries.
ClickHouseHook supports workloads beyond standard SQL operators, including bulk_insert_rows, streaming, and direct ClickHouse client calls; bulk inserts use the native columnar insert path.
For ClickHouse Cloud or another TLS-enabled cluster, configure secure as true and use port 8443. Astronomer can store the connection in its managed secrets backend and reuse it across deployments.
The provider works with Airflow’s common SQL framework, so SQLExecuteQueryOperator handles DDL, DML, and analytical queries. The post’s example uses it to create a MergeTree table and insert daily aggregates.
ClickHouseHook provides access to the underlying ClickHouse client. Its bulk_insert_rows method accepts a table, rows, column names, and batch size, and uses the native columnar insert path.
Create a connection with type clickhouse and point it at the ClickHouse Cloud host. For ClickHouse Cloud or any TLS-enabled cluster, set secure to true and use port 8443.
