How Apache DataFusion Runs SQL In-Process
Apache DataFusion is an embeddable query engine: SQL goes in, runs as columnar Arrow batches inside your own process, and results come out without a separate service.
Android's on-device machine learning stack lets apps run inference, image recognition, and text processing locally without sending data to servers, reducing latency and protecting privacy.
Android apps increasingly perform computation directly on the device using native machine learning frameworks, avoiding server round trips and keeping sensitive user data local. The flow moves from user input or sensor data through on-device models, local caching and preprocessing, and finally to app-ready results—all without network calls. This architecture powers real-time features like menu recognition, accessibility overlays, and live activity tracking. Understanding when and how to use on-device processing versus cloud APIs helps engineers design faster, more private mobile experiences.
The posts behind it
Yelp developed Menu Vision to help diners recognize menu items and view corresponding user-generated photos and reviews in real time using their phone cameras. The feature evolved from a two-day hackathon Android prototype into a production system deployed across iOS and Android. Client devices perform all optical character recognition, text cleanup, and dish matching locally using native machine learning frameworks, while dish metadata is prefetched upon opening a restaurant page. Backend pipelines combine partner data, reviews, and photo captions into a Cassandra database, filtering exclusively for dishes with photos. To handle optical character recognition errors and name variations, the matching pipeline runs exact matching, bidirectional substring matching, and Jaro-Winkler similarity matching.
bitdrift has joined ClickHouse’s House Mates program as a mobile observability partner, bringing mobile-native telemetry, tracing, and debugging to ClickStack. ClickStack provides an open-source or managed observability stack built on ClickHouse, with HyperDX and an OpenTelemetry Collector for logs, metrics, traces, and OTLP ingestion. bitdrift’s Capture SDK supports iOS, Android, and React Native, stores unsampled telemetry in a fixed-size on-device ring buffer, and uses control-plane configuration to decide what is collected or uploaded. Shared OpenTelemetry trace context lets engineers follow a mobile request’s trace ID from a session timeline into ClickStack, where backend traces, dependencies, logs, metrics, database operations, and infrastructure behavior are available, creating a continuous debugging path across the device and distributed systems.
Thumbtack migrated 1,500 Android screenshot tests from Firebase Test Lab to Roborazzi to eliminate slow and error-prone testing on remote emulators. The engineering team ported test suites from androidTest to test in batches of 20, adjusting test rules and annotations for Robolectric. Because Roborazzi runs in a single JVM process with parallel execution, the team had to debug shared font cache pollution and cross-platform shadow rendering inconsistencies between macOS and Debian. They resolved configuration repetition by mapping Robolectric annotations into module-level robolectric.properties files and avoided stale cached images by clearing Roborazzi's cache via a custom Gradle task. The migration significantly decreased CI runtimes while making local test recording and verification easier.
Unreal Engine games frequently experience performance issues such as frame-rate drops, hitches, and network degradation that do not register as application crashes. To address the lack of live production telemetry, the Sentry Unreal SDK introduces automatic performance metrics. The integration periodically samples frame times, network health, active UObject counts, physical memory usage, and garbage collection pause durations across desktop, console, and Android platforms. Telemetry entries attach contextual hardware and environment attributes alongside trace IDs to connect aggregate latency spikes directly to underlying traces and spans. Enabled by default in Unreal SDK version 1.11.0, this telemetry provides developers with fleet-wide visibility into hardware-specific bottlenecks across game releases.
Troubleshooting critical issues in the Grab app was hindered by incomplete user-journey data, because manually instrumenting hundreds of UI components left interaction gaps and delayed diagnosis. AutoTrack is a new SDK that records application state, user interactions, and UI screens in real time, creating an end-to-end session chronicle from launch through navigation. It tracks lifecycle transitions and launch mechanisms such as deeplinks and push notifications, while UIViewController, Activity, and Fragment lifecycle events identify the displayed screen. Screen metadata includes the full hierarchy as JSON; after personal information is redacted for GDPR/PDPA compliance, that data is used to train an AI model that generates an HTML representation of the screen and interactions. AutoTrack supports reproducing elusive bugs, automated issue assignment, UI test generation, and analytics-trigger validation, with future work adding network and performance signals, privacy guardrails, and automated triage.
React Native WebGPU and React Native Skia are presented as a graphics stack for advanced 2D, 3D, and general-purpose GPU workloads in native applications. The work uses Skia Graphite with Dawn, Google’s open-source WebGPU implementation, to replace separate OpenGL and Metal backend implementations with a unified architecture, while enabling Three.js, React Three Fiber, TensorFlow.js, and compute shaders. Three.js Shading Language lets the same shaders target WebGPU and WebGL, and Shopify’s Black Friday globe prototypes run natively with identical results to the web version. Architectural changes in React Native Skia moved from a mutable SkiaDOM to an immutable fabric reconciler, producing reported animation gains of up to 50% on iOS and nearly 200% on Android, plus 98% of reported Android crashes fixed. Graphite remains experimental, but adds dedicated-thread canvases and bidirectional 2D/3D composition, while Skia also supports macOS, tvOS, and headless Node.js rendering.
